Programme Notes for Blackburn Rovers.  12/04/2014

This afternoon Wednesdayite welcome the supporters of Blackburn Rovers to Hillsborough. When you consider how the Premiership has been dominated by the wealthy giants of the game since it's inception
there is something refreshing in seeing the name Blackburn Rovers as Premiership Champions in 1995. At that time they were backed by the millions of their life long fan, Jack Walker. He really did make the fairy tale come true for their supporters. It is some achievement that Blackburn are one of only 5 Clubs to have ever won the Premiership.

    NOTABLE PLAYERS
Obviously all the players who won the  Premier League with Kenny Dalglish as manager have gone into legend. Alan Shearer formed a devastating partnership up front with Chris Sutton. However I would like to give a special mention to Terry Gennoe who was the goalkeeping coach at the time. Terry holds the record as a Blackburn goalkeeper for the number of league appearances made for the Club (289 appearances compared to 287 by Brad Friedel). Terry played in the same secondary school team as myself in Oswestry, Shropshire and later we both played Sunday league for a short time, with Terry representing the "Bricklayers Sports" in Shrewsbury as he trained to be a P.E. teacher, before going to play professional football  at Bury, Crystal Palace, Southampton (where he was in the losing side to Forest in the 1979 League Cup Final) and of course Blackburn. Terry also coached at Newcastle and Celtic after leaving Rovers before taking a break from the game due to a back problem. I believe Terry then retired from the game and went to live in Spain for a while before returning to this country. He is currently goalkeeping coach at Aston Villa. Terry Gennoe, great servant to Blackburn and a Club legend.

    MEMORABLE MATCHES
There were many memorable games between the two of us earlier in our history but in recent years it really has been the best and the worst of times. Whilst our two 2-1 wins at Ewood Park in the 6th round of the F.A. Cup in 1966 and the League in 1980 were hugely significant, probably the best away performance I have witnessed by Wednesday was in our away first leg of the League Cup semi final  in 1993 when we won 4-2, playing exhilarating football. Needless to say it doesn't get much worse than losing 7-2 at the same ground in August, 1997, despite 2 great goals by Benito Carbone!
