    WEDNESDAYITE WEEKLY

ABOUT TO WALK OVER THE COALS

    EDDIEtorial

At the beginning of December last year, I wrote in this very column that the fixtures spreading out in front of us gave a struggling Wednesday side a great chance to turn our season around. As it happened, we embarked on a great run kickstarted with a gritty 1-0 win away at Barnsley, and by the time the dust settled on January we found ourselves off the bottom and flying up the table.

Now we find ourselves facing a daunting run of five games against sides at the top end of the division, starting with Palace tomorrow and leading into the return match against our six-fingered Dingle neighbours on March 30th.

I'm sure many fans look at Palace, Forest, Watford, Leicester and Cardiff upcoming with trepidation, but this division is as mad as always with teams completely incapable of putting together any kind of run, and teams in the bottom three beating teams in the top three. With the run that we're on, we have to believe in our ability to keep even the best players at this level quiet - so the only question is whether our loanees Lita and Wickham can deliver the thing we've been missing all season - goals.

I see no reason why we can't go to Watford and Leicester and pick up a point (or more, as we proved against Hull), and I don't see anything to fear from even Palace and Cardiff at Hillsborough, as long as the team gets off on the front foot and we fans make it an intimidating and boistrous atmosphere.

It would be great to go into that Barnsley game with nine points taken out of the five games - that will put us in a great position going into what is, on paper at least, a much easier run-in. Dave Jones reckons that 52 points will be the minimum for safety this time out. With 46 going into the last eight games of the season, we'd be looking at a great end to our first term back in the half-way house to the Premier League.

Apologies for the brevity of this week's Weekly...I confess that I've had to rush it out because I'm going up to Newcastle to stand in the front row of a Girls Aloud concert tonight. How many fellas can say that they've had both John Sheridan and Cheryl Cole's sweat on them? Not many, I'd wager...

    Up The Owls!

OWLS CLIMB A PLACE AT BLUES

There's nothing much to report from Wednesday's trip to St Andrew's on Tuesday night - but the point we took moved us a place up the table, which, combined with an abject performance from Wolves (whose fans are championing Danny Batth as the future!) means that the bottom of the table is as tight as ever. With a lot of teams on a downward curve, and only the Owls and Barnsley really maintaining any kind of form, the importance of the next five games is clear - if we keep moving forward (even two steps forward and one step back), we'll be fine this season.
